solving differential equations by converting to system of linear algebraic equations

Hello people. How do you guys do solving differential equations by converting to system of linear algebraic equations so easily? I just never seem to be able to solve a problem without going wrong a couple of times times. Please do not tell me to take extra tutoring. They are expensive and I cannot afford them. Any other idea would be more than welcome.
