Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
An improper fraction occurs when the numerator is larger than
the denominator.  This fraction is actually larger than 1 whole.
Therefore, when we change it to a mixed number, we have  .
Steps for changing improper fractions to mixed numbers:
Example: Change  to a mixed number.
Step 1: How many times does the numerator 3
divide into the denominator 8? This number becomes the whole
number 2
Step 2: 8 ÷ 3 = 2 with a remainder of 2. The
remainder becomes the numerator.
Step 3: Now write the Mixed number!  The denominator remains the same.
