Problema Solution

A rectangle and a triangle have the same perimeter. The rectangle has sides (x) and (x + 2). The triangle has sides (x), (x + 6), and (x + 4). Find the perimeter for both figures.

Answer provided by our tutors

The perimeter of a rectangle equals 2 time the width plus 2 times the length, or in our case: 2x + 2(x + 2)

The perimeter of a triangle is the sum of the lengths of its sides, or in our case: x + (x + 6) + (x + 4)

Since the perimeters of both figures are equal we can write the equation:

2x + 2(x + 2) = x + (x + 6) + (x + 4)

........

x = 6

The perimeter is: 6 + (6 + 6) + (6 + 4) = 6 + 12 + 10 = 18 + 10 = 28.
