Coordinate System

Coordinate Plane/System: combines two real number lines perpendicular to each other and that intersect at 0 on each line.
René Descartes: The great French mathematician/philosopher who developed the coordinate system. He lived from 1596-1650.
Axes: the x-axis and y-axis in a coordinate system.
Origin: the point at which the x and y axes intersect.
Quadrants: the four regions created by the intersection of the axes.
Coordinates: an ordered pair that indicates a point of location.

Signs of Coordinates in the Plane

In Quadrant 1, the x-coordinate and y-coordinate are both positive.

In Quadrant 2, the x-coordinate is always negative and the y-coordinate is always positive.

In Quadrant 3, the x-coordinate and y-coordinate are both negative.

In Quadrant 4, the x-coordinate is always positive and the y-coordinate is always negative.

On the x-axis, the y-coordinate is always 0.

On the y-axis, the x-coordinate is always 0.
