Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Multiplying or Dividing Fractions and Whole Numbers:

Change the mixed number to an improper fraction and then multiply or divide as usual. Change the mixed number to an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator times the whole number part, adding the numerator, and putting that number over the denominator.

8 times 3 = 24

24 plus 5 = 29

3 5/8 = 29/8

Adding or Subtracting with Mixed Numbers:

Find the least common denominator for the fraction part. Add or subtract as usual.
