Lesson:
Review adding fractions with different denominators and converting fractions to
decimals. Introduce the math activity by explaining to the students that Martin,
the
trumpet player, was waiting at the Tree of Hope for a gig. He was hired to play
at a fancy
party and wanted to let Solly know, because it was a leisure party. He does not
want
any one else to know where the party is, so he writes down some music notes as a
code.
Solly has to add the fractions that correspond with the music notes and then
convert the
answer into a decimal. The decimals match up with a letter. Then students need
to write
the letter in the blank with the same number as the problem to find out where
the part is
located.

Martin has a gig in Harlem and heard the party will be
jumpin. He wants to tell
Solly, but he doesn’t want any of the other musicians to take his job.
Therefore,
he writes a note to Solly in code telling him where the party is located. Help
Solly and Dave find the party by adding the fractions together to find the
total.
Then convert the total into a decimal. Match the decimal to the corresponding
letter and write the letter in the blank that with the same number as the
problem.
Make sure to show your work! You may use another piece of paper if there is
not enough room to work the problem. Make sure to staple your scratch paper
to the Jazzy Conversions sheet.
