College Syllabus for Intermediate Algebra
Course Information:
Meeting Days: M, T, W, F 10:00-10:50 in room A-326
Description: Study of properties and operations of number systems, polynomials
and factoring,
algebraic fractions, exponents, roots and radicals, first and second degree
equations, inequalities, functions and relations, system of equations and
inequalities,
exponential and logarithmic functions. (4 credit hours)
Prerequisite: Mat 096 with a grade of ”C” or better.
Final Exam: Wednesday, December 16 8:00-9:50. You may not take the final before
finals
week.

Student Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
(1) Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
(2) Divide polynomials by long division and synthetic division.
(3) Solve linear equations and inequalities of one variable.
(4) Graph linear equations and inequalities of two variables .
(5) Write the equation of a line using point-slope, and slope- intercept methods .
(6) Solve systems of two and three equations using substitution and elimination
methods .
(7) Factor polynomials by grouping and by writing as a sum or difference of
cubes .
(8) Factor trinomials .
(9) Simplify radical expressions.
(10) Add, subtract, multiply and divide radical expressions .
(11) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers .
(12) Solve radical equations.
(13) Solve quadratic equations by completing the square and by the quadratic
formula.
(14) Solve nonlinear equations such as those that are in quadratic form.
(15) Solve equations and inequalities that contain absolute values .
(16) Sketch parabolas.
(17) Solve applications using the algebraic methods studied in class.
(18) Recognize a function and use function notation.
(19) Simplify complex fractions.
(20) Solve problems involving proportion and variation.
(21) Define and evaluate exponential and logarithmic functions, and draw their
graphs .
(22) Solve equations involving exponential and logarithmic functions.
Required Text:
Intermediate Algebra Gustafson and Frisk, 8th edition, Brooks/Cole.
Course Requirements
(1) Complete responsibility for the text material including exercise sets.
(2) You are required to be present on the day of a scheduled test. If you are
not present
the day of a test, I will assume it is for a good reason. You will be al lowed to
makeup
or retake test 1, 2, or 3 for any reason. Makeup tests will be administered the
last
week of the semester. If you know in advance that you will not be present the
day
of a test, you may arrange to take it early.
Grading System:
(1) Random quizzes will be given throughout the semester. Quizzes may not be
made
up. Quizzes will make up 30% of your grade. I will drop your three lowest quiz
scores
when determining your course grade.
(2) Four tests will be given. Tests make up 50% of your grade.
(3) The final exam is comprehensive and will count for 20% of your grade.
(4) The grading scale is
100%-90% = A
89%-80% = B
79%-70% = C
69%-60% = D
59% and lower = F
This grading scale guarantees a particular grade. Students whose course
percentages are
close to a decision number will be considered on an individual basis using
criteria including
attendance, attitude, improvement, and participation.
Attendance Policy:
Regular attendance is required to be successful in this course. Excessive
absences may result
in a recommendation of withdrawal to Student Services.
Emergency Procedures:
Class cancelations due to inclement weather will be announced on local radio
stations
Students may also
call the
College at (815) 825-2086. Class cancelations due to instructor absence will be
posted on
the classroom door. Room changes will be announced in advance whenever possible
and
posted on the classroom door.
