Course Descriptions for Mathematics

MATH 1000 Math I 60 hours

This course offers an introduction to basic mathematics using mathematical concepts that can be
applied to everyday life. Topics include fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, conversions, averages
and percentages. Prerequisites: Pass Entrance Level Math Exam or Refresher Math.

Objectives:

• Define and recognize prime numbers, composite numbers and factors .
• Find the prime factorization of two or more composite numbers.
• Find the least common multiple and greatest common factor of two or more numbers.
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with like and unlike denominators by hand .
• Convert between fractions, decimals and percents.
Solve application problems involving fractions and decimals.
• Define and calculate the mean, median, mode and range of a set of numbers.
• Apply averages to word problems.
• Set up and simplify given ratios in three different forms.
• Convert metric and English units.
• Set up and solve proportions .
• Set up equations using percents from word problems.
• Set up and solve interest problems.
• Set up and solve discounting (sales) problems.
• Set up and solve increase/decrease problems.

MATH 1010 Math III 120 hours

This intermediate algebra course covers rational exp onents and radicals , quadratic equations, functions
and nonlinear graphing, logarithm and exponential functions , linear equations and systems (3x3
systems) and systems of nonlinear equations. Articulated with WSU Math 1010. Prerequisites:
Accuplacer placement, Math II, Level II or WSU Math 950 (C or better) taken in the last year

Objectives:

Identify real , rational, irrational, integer, natural and whole numbers.
• Apply order of operations to simplify expressions.
• Define absolute value and perform operations on integers.
• Use operations to simplify polynomials and factor polynomials.
• Solve linear equations and inequalities.
• Use the Cartesian coordinate system to graph linear equations.
• Solve equations and inequalities that contain absolute values.
• Find the solution to linear systems by graphing.
• Solve linear systems by the substitution and elimination method.
• Solve 3 x 3 systems of equations.
• Solve applications of systems of equations.
• Simplify radical expressions and solve radical equations.
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide radical expressions.
• Define conjugates and use them to rational denominators.
• Find the nth root of a number.
• Solve quadratic equations by using the square root property, factoring or completing the square.
• Use the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations.
• Define discriminate and use the discriminate to determine the nature of solutions.
• Simplify complex numbers and write in standard form.
• Simplify and perform operations with radical expressions and complex numbers.
• Evaluate powers of i.
• Define function, range and domain.
• Determine if a graph is a function or one-to-one.
• Graph quadratic functions.
• Find the intercepts of quadratic functions.
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide functions.
• Find the composition of functions.
• Find the inverse of a given function.
• Graph inverse functions and determine if the inverse is also a function.
• Apply properties of logarithms.
• Solve logarithmic and exponential equations.
• Solve higher order quadratic equations by factoring or “u” substitution.
• Solve quadratic equations and inequalities.
• Solve systems of nonlinear equations and graph nonlinear functions.
• Solve rational inequalities.

WKSK 1400B Workplace Relations 60 hours

Develop essential human-relation skills needed to maintain gainful and satisfying employment. This
course includes familiarization with problematic areas found in the workforce including, solving
problems; understanding relationships and diversity; increasing personal ethics; and developing strong
personal, interpersonal, and human relation skills.

• Utilize problem-solving skills
• Understand working relations and diversity
• Understand business ethics
• Develop interpersonal skills
• Develop personal and human relations skills

WKSK 1500B Job Seeking Skills 30 hours

Prepare students to successfully apply for a job. This course will present essential job-seeking skills
needed to find gainful employment.

Objectives:

• Complete a job application form
• Develop a current resume
• Create a letter of application
• Perform successfully in an interview
• Demonstrate appropriate follow-up procedures
