MASTER COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR PRE-ALGEBRA I AND LAB

CATA LOG DESCRIPTION :

Topics include a review of the basic arithmetic ope rations of whole numbers, mixed numbers, fractions, decimals and percents , ratio and proportion, basic operations of real numbers , simplifying algebra expressions and solving basic linear equations . (MAT 0002 cannot be used toward A.A., A.S., A.A.S. degree requirements.) Lab fee: $5. FA, SP, SU.

This course also helps develop the general education skill of (1) critical thinking: (4) computation: and (6) computer literacy.

CREDIT HOURS: 3 College Preparatory Credits and 1 Lab Credit

CONTACT HOURS: 45 Hours Lecture and 30 Hours Laboratory

MAJOR LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Read and write names of rational numbers. (1, 4, 6)
2. Perform basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation) with integers, rational numbers, mixed numbers, and numbers in decimal form. (1, 4, 6)
3. Convert freely between fractions, decimals, and percents. (1, 4, 6)
4. Evaluate expressions. (1, 4, 6)
5. Use the order of operations to simplify an expression. (1, 4, 6)
6. Compare the size of decimals and the size of fractions. (1, 4, 6)
7. Simplify and combine like terms in algebraic expressions. (1, 4, 6)
8. Solving elementary equations in one variable . (1, 4, 6)
9. Perform basic divisibility tests to determine factors of a given number. (1, 4, 6)
10. Calculate the least common multiple of two or more numbers. (1, 4, 6)
11. Find the prime factorization of numbers. (1, 4, 6)
12. Express a fraction in lowest terms . (1, 4, 6)
13. Be able to solve basic proportions. (1, 4, 6)
14. De termine the perimeter and area of rectangles, squares , triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. (1, 4, 6)
15. Solve proportions involving similar shapes. (1, 4, 6)
16. Write and compare unit rates. (1, 4, 6)
