Measures for Counting Noses

Description: Basic educational presentation of health statistics by a professor of
Epidemio logy via satellite television broadcast. Interactive activity will fol low . Introduction and
mode ration by a state professional in maternal and child health.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:
•Understand the definition, comp onents and uses of Epidemiology
Differentiate between types of measures, i.e., dichotomous variables vs . continuous
variables
•Know the definition, usage and formulas of rates , proportions and ratios
Realize the difference between types of incidence and prevalence of a disease or
event
•Understand the uses of measures of association, i.e., risk ratio, rate ratio and
attributable proportion

Target Audience: The target audience for this satellite broadcast are current students
of the Data Use Academy, sponsored by IDHS and UIC.
