REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:
Prealgebra 3rd Edition, by Blair, Tobey, and Slater published by Prentice
Hall
REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY:
TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator required for course – discuss with
instructor if you own a different graphing calculator
CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
A pre- algebra course including problem solving with
fractions, percents, proportions, integers, geometry, variables, simple linear
equations , tables and graphs. Satisfactory completion of this course al lows the
student to exit to DSPM 0800 Elementary Algebra. (Prerequisite: admission is
only by the college assessment and placement procedure.)
3 credits
COURSE OUTCOMES:
1) Perform the basic operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division) using the order of operations
on numeric expressions involving rational numbers (whole numbers, fractions,
decimals, and integers)
with and without using a calculator..
2) Evaluate expressions involving powers and roots . 3) Simplify algebraic
expressions including using the distributive property 4) Evaluate algebraic
expressions when given values for the variables. 5) Solve a linear equation in
one variable involving two operations. 6) Write a ratio, a proportion, solve a
proportion for an unknown value, and solve problems involving
percents. 7) Determine the other equivalent forms of the number when given a
fraction, decimal number , or percent.
8) Determine the area and perimeter (or circumference) of a triangle, rectangle,
and circle .
9) Determine the mean, median, mode, and range for a given set of data.
10) Determine equivalent measure of length, weight or mass, volume, or time
within the same system when
given either customary or metric units of measurement.
11) Convert between standard notation and Scientific notations.
12) Solve real -world application problems that are integrated throughout the
course content.
13) Create a table of outputs and graph for a given relation
14) Use graphing calculators and/or computers in learning and doing mathematics.

prepared to enroll in DSPM 0800.
**Please take DSPM 0800 as soon as possible. Some
students delay and forget what they have learned in DSPM 0700. However, state
rules do not allow students to drop back and re-take DSPM 0700 after they have
passed the course.**
COURSE GROUND RULES:
All students attending Walters State Community College,
regardless of the time and location of the class, must abide by the rules and
regulations outlined in the current Walters State Catalog/Student Handbook and
the current Walters State Timetable of Classes. A copy of the Catalog /Handbook
and the Timetable of Classes may be obtained from the admissions office on the
main campus or at any of our off-campus sites.
Students should attend the first day of class or contact
the instructor prior to the first class. Failure to do this may result in being
dropped from the class.
Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic
dishonesty are prohibited.
Students with disabilities must register with Student
Support Services (CCEN), Room 262 (phone 423-585-6892) if they need any special
facilities, services, or consideration.
Students in need of tutoring assistance are encouraged to
contact the Office of Student Tutoring located in the College Center (CCEN),
Room 261. The phone number is 423-585-6920.
Students receiving any type of financial aid or
scholarship should contact the Financial Aid Office before making any changes to
their schedule. Schedule changes without prior approval may result in loss of
award for the current term and future terms.
