Basic Mathematics

The following is a suggested course out line for MAT -009/013A for classes meeting twice a week.

DAY # MATERIAL COVERED
1 Introduction ( During this half-hour introduction, the instructor should hand out the
course syllabus and give a thorough explanation of the course. Many of the students do
not really understand the concept of the course and might have questions pertaining to
the requirements. Students should be made aware that there is an additional lab
requirement in this course for the first five or six weeks of the semester
  1.1

Whole Numbers (For this section, one could cover the basics of whole numbers,
including: place value , reading and writing, rounding, estimating, trouble spots in
operations, such as zeros in subtraction , multiplication and division, exponents , order of
operations and word problems. This must obviously be a very brief review. Instructors
often assign Worksheet #1, found in the Course Materials section of the lab manual to be
handed in at the next class.)

Diagnostic Test – Students should take the 20-question Diagnostic Test at the end of this
session. Using the results of this test, you should fill out a triplicate prescription sheet.
One copy goes to Lab Coordinator, one copy goes to the student and you keep a copy.

2 1.2 (Addition of Signed Numbers)
Fractions
( Usually half of the class is spent on reviewing fraction concepts, defining
proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers, reviewing simplifying fractions ,
equivalent fractions and ope rations with fractions , including mixed number operations.
Worksheet #2 can be assigned. Because worksheet #2 covers word problems as well,
which isn’t covered until the next class, you would probably not want to collect
worksheet #2 until you have finished reviewing fraction word problems).
Students should sign the course contract during this session.
Math Lab Tour(
Your class has been scheduled to have a lab orientation in Main Hall
142 for the last hour of this first session. During this time, one of the staff members in
the lab will introduce the students to the rules and regulations and mechanics of the lab
and will go over some of the software which is available, including helping students to
register for various software programs. The software available and the instructions for
using this software is available in both the student and instructor lab manuals)
3 more 1.2 ( subtraction of signed numbers)

Fraction Word Problems (fraction word problems are notoriously difficult for students.
You might want to hand out supplements on these types of problems).

4 more 1.2 (multiplication and division of signed numbers)
Decimals
(Usually about 30-40 minutes is spent review decimals, including: reading,
writing and rounding decimals, operations with decimals, and changing fractions to
decimals and decimals to fractions, and squaring decimals and square roots of decimals .
You might want to assign worksheet #3 to be handed in at the next class.
5 1.3 ( Because percents have not been reviewed up to this point, percent skills should be
omitted when teaching this section)
Ratio and Proportion (Students usually have little trouble with this section. Worksheet
#4 includes both ratio and proportion and percent . You might want to assign the worksheet for the class following the completion of percents. Students can get started on
the ratio and proportion part of this worksheet).
6 1.4
Percent Notation
(For this review include converting percent notation to fraction and
decimal notation and converting fraction and decimal notation to percent notation).
7 Percent Word Problems (This is another area in which students notoriously have
trouble and anxiety. Because the final exam in basic mathematics is getting close at this
point of the course, you might want to hand out one of the Mat-010 review available in
Center 2. You might want to start with the percent word problems to solidify percent
review. Again, remind students that they must put in their 12 ½ hours of lab time and
complete their mastery quizzes. At this time, they should make an appointment for the
final exam in the Testing Center.
8 Review for Test #1 (Chapter 1 in the algebra book )
TEST #1 (Chapter 1 in the algebra book)
(There are no standardized tests)
Review for Basic Mathematics Cumulative Final Exam
( You might want to go over
the first review you handed out and give a second review as well).
  NOTE:

Once you have graded the final exam and gathered all of the mastery quiz results lab
hour records, you will be able to give students a grade in the MAT-009 part of the
course. The roster for this course is not filled out until the end of the semester, but the
students should be made aware of their grade at this time. If there are any students who
have not passed the MAT-009 at this time, at your discretion, they may be given an
extension to keep working on their skills in the lab or with you and then retake the final
exam. If there are students who have no chance of passing the MAT-009 course, they
should be advised to with draw before the deadline for withdrawals. If there are students
who are clearly struggling with the MAT-009 portion of the course and are not mastering
the MAT-013A portion of the course, it would be wise to advise them to keep working on
the basic mathematics portion and withdraw from the MAT-013A course before the
deadline for withdrawals. Some of this must be dealt with on an individual basis
9. Final Exam (this exam might be later than the 9th class meeting, depending upon the

9 Final Exam (this exam might be later than the 9th class meeting, depending upon the
semester. Each semester instructors will get information about the latest date for
administering the Final Exam).
  NOTE:

Students who have not completed all of their required hours in the lab
will not be allowed to take the final exam. The names of these students
will be submitted by the instructor to the Dr. DeLucia, who will
administratively withdraw the students from both MAT-009 and MAT-
013A.

There is an instructor’s lab manual and a student’s lab manual for the MAT-009/013A course online
through WebCT. You will be given a user ID and a password so that you can look at the
manual as an instructor. Your students will automatically be registered in WebCt so that they can
use the student manual. The student ID will be FirstnameLastname and the password will be the
student ID without any leading zeros.

This manual will provide information for the instructor and student that will be very useful during the
semester. Instructors should look at this manual prior to the beginning of the semester so that they
can become familiar with all of the workings of the combination course.

Check List

The following are things you will need throughout the semester:

1. Diagnostic Tests for MAT-009 (given on the first day of class)
2. triplicate prescription sheets (filled out by the second class meeting)
3. Student contracts to be signed during the second class meeting
4. Student outlines (you create these and hand them out on the first day)
5. Final Exams – available on-line or in Center 2
6. End- Term Summary – to be handed in at the end of the semester

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
