MTH001 Basic Mathematics
I. CATA LOG DESCRIPTION
A. Prerequisite: None
B. 3 semester credit hours
C. Basic Mathematics deals with the development of
arithmetic skills. The student will have the opportunity to learn arithmetic
operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Basic Mathematics gives
the student
basic mathematical skills to prepare them for Beginning Algebra. Basic
Mathematics is not applicable toward the Associate degree (F, S, Su).
II. EXPECTED LEARNING OBJECTIVES/ASSESSMENT MEASURES
| Students will employ mathematical
concepts to solve real life problems by creating and solving unit rates,
ratios and proportions . |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
errors. |
| Students will analyze given
components and arrange the components in the Percent Proportion to
calculate percentages, sales taxes, discounts, commissions and
increases/decreases. |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
error. Oral recitation of formulas. |
| Students will compute simple and
compound interest and use the interest to formulate total account value
and total amount due on a loan. |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
errors. |
| Students will compare and contrast
the English and Metric systems of measurement and convert units within
the English system, the Metric system and from one system to the other. |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
errors. Oral recitation of conversion techniques. |
| Students will assess real life
geometric objects and/or drawings and select the appropriate geometric
formula (for perimeter, area and volume) to calculate the answer
(including label) with the correct unit and exponenet. |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
errors. |
| Students will apply Basic Algebraic
rules to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by
evaluating expressions or by solving lower level equations. |
Written Exam
Homework Assignments
In class performance, observation, discussion, review, analysis of test
errors. Oral recitation of rules. |
