MATH 111 Intermediate Algebra

Course Description:

Course Description: Intermediate Algebra covers elementary set notation, a
description of the adding -exponents/solution-to-exercise-real.html">real number system and its major subsets, and an introduction to
the Complex number system . Solving linear , quadratic, and rational equations and
inequalities as well as radical equations and systems of equations is also covered.
The course includes an investigation of graphical, numerical , and symbolic
re presentations and manipulations of various functions including linear, rational and
quadratic
. Matrices are introduced; properties of integral exp onents are reviewed
and extended to rational exponents . Intermediate algebra also covers simplifying ,
adding, subtracting and multiplying radicals . Problem solving and the function
concept are integrated throughout.

General Education Outcomes:

General Education Outcomes: Meets level 1 of the critical thinking general
education outcomes: identify issues or problems and articulate a process for
resolving them.

Quizzes and Exams:

A quiz or exam will be given every week. There will be 10
quizzes, consisting of an in-class portion and a take-home portion. There will be 5
regular exams, and a cumulative final exam.

Homework, As signments and Attendance :

You are expected to attend every
class. Homework problems will be assigned for practice. You should keep all class
materials organized in a notebook or binder.

Make-up Policy:

Arrangements may be made in advance to take an exam at a
different time at the Center for Learning, located in the Osterlin Building.

Tutoring:

Help will be available during the office hours listed above. Additionally,
NMC has a free tutoring service. To sign up for tutoring, go to Osterlin room 152.

Grading:

Quizzes 400 pts.
Exams 500 pts.
Final Exam 100 pts.
Total 1000 pts.
