COURSE PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
This course is de signed to help students acquire a solid
foundation in algebra, inequalities /syllabus-of-prealgebra.html">preparing them
for other courses such as calculus, and business calculus. To show students how
algebra can
model and solve authentic real –world problems. To enable students to develop
problem-solving
skills, while fostering critical thinking, within an interesting setting.
COURSE TOPICS
Upon completion of this course, each student will be able
to understand:
The fundamental concepts of algebra, polynomials,
factoring polynomials , rational
expressions, equations, inequalities, and mathematical models , graphs and
graphing
utilities, complex numbers, quadratic and other type of equations. linear,
quadratic, and rational
inequalities, distance formula, basics of functions, graphs of functions,
transformations of
functions, combinations, composite functions, dividing polynomials, zeros of
polynomials ,
rational functions and their graphs, modeling using variation, exp onential and
logarithmic
functions, system of linear equations, matrices and matrix solutions to linear
systems , matrix
operations and their applications. In addition , the trigonometry part of this
course introduces you
to both right triangle and unit circle trigonometry , including work with
ideates, vectors, and
oblique triangles, the complex numbers, roots of unity , and trigonometric
functions.
Method of evaluation :
10% Ten-minute quizzes. Paper and pencil work, and no
techno logy are allowed . *
50% Hour exam, at least five will be given. **
20% Homework assignments. **
20% Comprehensive final exam.* *
Ten-minute quizzes are short exercises designed to
verify that you have learned the minimum
baseline skills you need to succeed in this and later courses.*
Grading:
60% D 68% D+ 70% C- 73% C 78% C+
80% B- 83% B 88% B+ 90% A- 93% A

Rules
1. No late homework assignments for any reason, three
homework assignments with the
lowest score will be dropped. No homework assignments will be accepted for the
day that
homework assignment is due and student does not attend the class, and due
homework
assignments will be collected ONLY at the beginning of class period. ***
2. I will grade only selected problems from each homework assignments; you
cannot
depend on my grading of your homework assignments to discover your
misunderstanding. Please, if you have any questions about your homework
assignments,
stop by my office and ask for help.
3. No make-up quiz or test. ***
4. To earn full credit on all your homework assignments, quizzes, and tests you
must show
all your work step by step and not only the final answers.
5. No food in the class room.
