Review for College Algebra Exam 1

This is a topics sheet recalling ideas we've talked about for Exam 1. Any topics discussed
in class and any questions similar to the homework as signments are fair game for the exam.
A good place to start studying for the exam (after you've completed all the homework
assignments) would be: here, actively reviewing your notes, and making sure you
understand and can do all of the homework problems.

1.3

•Be able to solve linear equations
•If you want to solve an equation that has fractions , either with numbers or variables
or both in the denominator, what is the first thing you want to do?
•Be able to factor quadratic expressions
•If you have an equation like (x-2)(x-3) = 0, why does it make sense to set x-2 = 0
and x - 3 = 0? If you have an equation like (x - 2)(x - 3) = 6 why is it not valid to
set x - 2 = 6 and x - 3 = 6?

1.4

•On a Cartesian coordinate system , be able to label the x-axis, y-axis, origin, and
quadrants I, II, III, and IV.
•Be able to locate points given an ordered pair and be able to name an ordered pair
given a point on the Cartesian coordinate system.
•Be able to find the distance between two points, the midpoint between two points, and
the slope of a line between two points.

1.5

Be able to use your calculator to:
graph an equation
change the viewing window
•determine where a graph crosses the x-axis

1.6

•Know and be able to use the slope-intercept formula for a line
•Know and be able to use the point-slope formula for a line
•Be able to find the equation of a line given: 2 points; 1 point and a slope; the y- intercept and slope ; or other clues
•Know how to find the slope of a line parallel to a given line
•Know how to find the slope of a line perpendicular to a given line

2.1

•Be able to solve quadratic equations by factoring
•Be able to solve quadratic equations by using the quadratic formula
•How can you use the graph of an equation to check your answer when you solve an equation algebraically ?
•Be able to give both an exact solution (even if it involves square roots ) and also the decimal approximation of the solution
•Using the quadratic formula, why do you sometimes get two solutions, sometimes one solution , and sometimes zero solutions?

2.2

•Be able to solve equations involving absolute values
•Be able to solve equations with one term raised to a power
•What must you remember when taking a 4th root that you don't have to worry about with a 5th root?
•Be able to solve equations of quadratic type. How can you identify such an equation?
•Be able to solve equations with radicals
